Dr. Rick Cohen
Dr. Cohen or as he prefers to be called “Rick” first moved to the Island in 1982.
Originally from the prairies he had never seen so much rain nor did he truly know what “sea sickness” felt like. After living in remoteness for almost two years he decided he definitely was a city boy and weekend outdoor adventurer. He moved back to the prairies where he worked with human pharmaceutical companies in sales.
Rick has been practicing veterinary medicine since 1990 when he graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine with “Distinction”. He started working at a busy local practice and doing house calls but became interested in emergency medicine and worked for seven years as an emergency doctor at Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital. He has consulted with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in marine mammal medicine and often donned his hip waders to assist in whale autopsies.
Dr. Cohen opened Admirals walk Pet Clinic in November of 1998 and has been providing veterinary care to pets in the Victoria ever since. He has done a lot of training in pet loss support and acts as a consultant on the “pet loss support line”. He has lectured publicly on this subject and offered workshops for veterinary and veterinary support staff. Dr. Cohen sold the practice to Canadian Pet Veterinary Partners as their practice philosophy and values mirrored his. After many years of providing full-time vet care, he has reduced his hours to only one or two days a week.
